kowtow popof drops the pop off

Wampus Multimedia artist Kowtow Popof has just released the limited edition EP, Kowtow Drops the Pop Off, a fascinating mix of instrumentals and lyric-based songs that cannily blends hints of Peter Gabriel, Graham Parker, and Bill Nelson. The Rockville, Maryland-based singer-songwriter's latest effort shuttles the listener to a locale that calls to mind a misshapen version of Walt Disney’s Tomorrowland. Behind a lush edge of vocals, guitars, and keyboards, Popof augments his miniatures with blips, whooshes, and samples -- and the resulting effect is one of rootsy orchestration, like Steve Earle leading a computerized version of the London Philharmonic.

The eight-song disc previews tracks from a pair of full-length CDs slated for release on Wampus in 2004: the mostly vocal End of Greatness and the instrumental Exalted Headband.

Lou Reed Tribute CD Hits Stores

Wampus Multimedia introduces After Hours: a Tribute to the Music of Lou Reed, a retrospective of 14 Reed classics interpreted by emerging artists in the indie scene. Through track selection and sequencing, After Hours traces Reed’s career from the late 1960s to the present. From the optimism of Johnny J Blair’s "Sunday Morning" to the ambivalence of Brook Pridemore’s title track, After Hours tells the story of an artist unencumbered by popular expectations, yet, intriguingly, popular. From Radio Caroline’s understated "Pale Blue Eyes" to Kowtow Popof’s playful "Satellite of Love," the CD looks beyond the famous Reed persona to the brilliance of the Reed songs.

After Hours runs the gamut of Reed’s eclectic career, from Velvet Underground nuggets (Cordalene’s "Who Loves the Sun," The Crowd Scene’s "Candy Says," Joe Scinta’s "Temptation Inside Your Heart," The Special Agents’ "All Tomorrow’s [Beach] Parties") to vintage early solo material (Okapi Guitars’ "Vicious," tvfordogs’ "How Do You Think It Feels," Silent4’s "I Love You," Music for Viola’s "Going Down") to latter-day Lou (The Underhills’ "Turn to Me," Lee Rude’s "Cremation").

Whether one sees Reed as the Godfather of Punk, a Dylan refractor, a cross-dressing provocateur, or an earnest missionary for the cause of literate rock music, his influence can’t be denied. His career spans more than 35 years, from his seminal role in the Velvet Underground through his reinventions as glam jester, hardcore pre-punk, lovestruck Romeo, and, finally, acerbic rock ‘n’ roll survivor. After Hours: a Tribute to the Music of Lou Reed is available from CD Street, CD Baby, Amazon, Borders, CD Now and many other retailers.

Kowtow Popof / Kowtow Drops the Pop Off

Powerfully nuanced postmodern rave-ups that set the car radio ablaze. "Preternaturally surrealist post-pop." --Eve Zibart, The Washington Post

Various Artists / After Hours: a Tribute to the Music of Lou Reed

Emerging indie artists create the ultimate Lou Reed retrospective.

tvfordogs / Heavy Denver

The best modern-rock record of the year -- hear it for yourself.

Amateur God / Near Life Experience

Dark gothic-semi-vocal-ambient music in the tradition of Mylene Farmer, All About Eve, Celtic Frost, Type O Negative, Sisters of Mercy, The Gathering, Jean Michel Jarre, Orbital, Front 242, Rammstein, Art of Noise, and Voivod.

Various Artists / If I Were a Richman: a Tribute to the Music of Jonathan Richman

A wildly entertaining ride through the repertoire of one of rock's most original and eclectic songwriters. Like Lou Reed & the Velvet Underground before him, Richman's deceptively straightforward music defies easy categorization. From his early days with the original Modern Lovers, through numerous iterations of the Lovers, to his latter-day solo career, Richman's work has mixed an arresting sense of innocence with a deep sensitivity to human emotion.

Various Artists / Glass Flesh 2: a Tribute to Robyn Hitchcock

Twenty-one great ways to skin Robyn Hitchcock's cat. Indispensable.

Wampeters / Murder Your Darlings

D.C. post-modernists reinvent the contrarian rock sensibility. Smoldering chamber rock descended from the Band, the Beatles, and the Beach Boys. "A great narrative album. The last great mainstream release that exemplifies this method of development of style and sound is Wilco's Summer Teeth." --Heidi Drockelman, IndieMusic.com

Arms of Kismet / unreleased tracks

It's postmodern rock for the savvy, ironic streetcrawler. Check out tracks from next year's debut Arms of Kismet CD, including the new "Sail Seven."

Mark Doyon / Bonneville Stories

Crisp fiction from Arms of Kismet's Mark Doyon that's as dark as optimism gets. "A brilliant collection of beautifully written stories that made me cringe, grimace, and laugh, while sometimes moving me to great pity.... There just aren't any flaws here, and I can't possibly do this book justice in a review. No one could, really...." --Laurie Edwards, CultureDose.net
