While his
music has been described in terms of intriguing pairings such as World
Party and the Cars, the Guess Who and Joe Jackson, or T-Rex and Graham
Parker, Rockville, Maryland-based singer/songwriter Kowtow Popof
has continually endeavored to fashion a singular sound. From varied influences
such as David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Elvis Costello, and Crack the Sky, Kowtow
weaves folk, garage, electronic, and pop music into his own personal blend
of rock.
Kowtow
has been hard at work following the release and promotion of his third
CD, Eat My Dust, pushing the limits of his home-brewed sound, mixing
samples and drum loops with more traditional rock instrumentation, and
posting the new tunes on the internet via mp3 as they are done. These
“e-singles” are compiled in the forthcoming limited edition CD (Spring
2003) entitled Kowtow Drops the Pop Off. The collection will be
a teaser, previewing songs from Kowtow’s next proper album, End of
Greatness, and from Exalted Headband (Unauthorized Soundtrack),
a set of original instrumentals based on a fictitious graphic novel about
even more fictitious film and tv shows (both set for release in 2004).
Kowtow
also appears on Wampus Multimedia’s latest release, After
Hours: a Tribute to the Music of Lou Reed, with “Satellite of
Love,” assisted by members of Virginia’s Hitchcock Blonde, Janna Audey,
and Rob Santos. Kowtow is currently collaborating with Hitchcock Blonde
on several songs and will soon be seen and heard with longtime guitar
pal Santos performing acoustic sets in the D.C. area promoting Drops
the Pop Off.
